West Bengal’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has emerged as a significant test of India’s democratic credibility. Reports from April 2026 indicate that around 90. 82 lakh were deleted during the revision of the electoral rolls. The sheer magnitude of these removals warrants close examination; the reported effect on Muslim voters makes such examination even more necessary.

These are disturbingly high figures. The Telegraph reported more than 57% of the deletions occurred in 10 districts adjacent to Bangladesh, where more than 70% of those whose names were deleted from voter’s lists were Muslim. An analysis by the SABAR Institute of voters reported by The Week found that 2,700 of 2,826 (95. 5%) voters had been deleted in Nandigram whose names were deleted from the supplementary rolls were Muslim, in a constituency where Muslims made up about 26% of voters in 2021.

The onslaught didn’t end with the elections. The Election Commission informed the Supreme Court in September that 22.21 lakh deleted voters had sought their restoration to the electoral rolls. As of October 9, the Supreme Court was weighing whether tribunals should give priority to cases filed by deleted voters, before the scheduled municipal elections. How can democracy be representative of all of us when so many of us are still fighting to get our names back?

BJP’s political rhetoric linking the issue of alleged illegal migration has made the Muslim minorities in particular sensitive. While the Election Commission states that the revision was to exclude ineligible entries, persistent serious doubts about wrongful deletions and uneven documentation burdens along religious lines cannot be ignored.

A voter’s name isn’t a favor bestowed by the government. It is the basis of our democracy. The Election Commission needs to provide clear data, probe well- founded testimonies of exclusion based on discrimination, and provide effective recourse. The BJP must be held accountable for the type of political environment that has led to these fear- based anxieties.

Indian democracy is distant from Muslims. Their votes, citizenship, and constitutional rights need to be safeguarded.

IF ALL THE VOTES COUNT, ALL ELIGIBLE VOTERS MUST COUNT.
