They stress on controlling  dissent through digital blackouts instead of working  towards ensuring root causes of unrest are taken care of.

In the first two months of 2026 alone more than 18 internet shutdown orders have been recorded from states such as Manipur and Assam. These shutdowns have not only disturbed the ordinary lives of the people, they have also restrained the publishing of journalism for civil liberties in  Northeaster States.

Nobody’s taking Internet blackout away from India, a report by the BBC News revealed that India still sits on top of the list of countries suffering from the most Internet blackout in the world.

Why Northeast India Internet Shutdowns 2026 are increasing?

The number of times that they shut down is not by chance. It reflects a policy choice.

Law and Order Justification

Explanations of shutdowns often call for the ‘government but-without-explaining-why’ approach in terms of justifications provided for shutdowns by government is to ,prevent misinformation, to stop violence, and to maintain  public order. However data would makes us think otherwise.

In Manipur only, more than 200 days of the internet restriction between the year 2023 and 2025

In spite of the shutdowns, ethnic violence continued resulting in more than 200 deaths and 60,000 people being displaced.

This is an important question:If the shutdowns work, why is the violence continuing?

Economic Impact of Internet Shutdowns in North East India

The Northeast India Internet Shutdowns 2026 are a political problem – but also an economic disaster.

Massive Financial Losses

India has lost 1.9 billion worth of money due to internet shutdowns in 2023 (Top10VPN data)

Small businesses in the Northeast India, companies reported 30 – 70% loss of their income during the blackout periods

Impact on Key Sectors

E-Commerce comes grinding to a halt,

Students loose access to online education

Healthcare systems suffer from time delays in communication

For a region who is already struggling with development gaps this is a devastation.

Civil Liberties are Under Attack

The most disturbing part about NE India Internet Shutdowns 2026 is the assaulting the basic right.

Freedom of Expression

Shutdowns silence:

Journalists Reporting From Conflict Zones

Activists pointing out human rights abuses

Citizens sharing realities on the ground

Legal Concerns

The supreme court of India in the year 2020 made a ruling that:

Internet access has been linked to freedom of speech (Article 19)

Shutdowns need to be temporary, necessary and proportionate.

Yet, frequent long term shutdowns certainly contradict these principles.

Political Strategy in Blackouts on the Internet

There is a more profound strategy that the way BJP government has handled the situation in the northeast reveals.

Information Control

By closing down, on the internet:

Narratives are controlled

International scrutiny is reduced

Censorship of reports from the ground

Avoiding Accountability

Instead of addressing:

BJP government promotes ethnic tensions, governance failures and security lapses, instead of addressing ground issues, opting for a digital veil. This shifts the blame of the policy failure to information repression.

Case study Manipur Crisis & Shutdowns

Manipur is however the most obvious example. Where;

Violence began in May 2023

Internet to be shut down for months at a stretch

Restrictions even in 2026 are still intermittent

Despite this:

Videos of violence eventually leaked out

Outrage from the public increased nationally and internationally

This proves one thing:

Shutdowns are delay of the truth – not elevation.

Why is Internet Shutdown so Important in Northeast India 2026

This problem is not limited to the Northeast. It is setting a dangerous precedent. If normalised, shutdowns can be used in any part of India. Leading to even more democratic backsliding.

Frequent blackouts are the symptoms of:

Weak governance

Fear of dissent

Shrinking democratic space

Global Image

India claws at being digital super power, but leads the world in shutdowns. Receiving huge criticism by Watchdogs around the globe making it’s democratic values questionable.

The Way Forward

Instead of resorting into the shutdowns, the government needs to invest in conflict resolution mechanisms, strengthen local governance, be transparent when communicating, hold  authorities to account for their actions.

Policy Reforms Needed

Definite limits on shut down time

Judicial oversight

Public disclosure of shutdown orders

Conclusion

The Northeast India Internet Shutdowns 2026 brings to mind a troubling condition:

Digital repression is emerging as the coming heir to democratic government.

Rather than deal with conflicts the BJP government are silencing them at the very least for the time being, to let the problems fester deeper.

Internet In democracy internet should be a democratic tool not for control. Until they change policies, the Northeast would continue to pay the price – economically, socially and politically.
